Description

The LIFE-MEGA project aims at monitoring and reducing NH3, CH4, and PM emissions from pig farming, a sector in which the deterioration of air quality poses a health risk to both animals and workers. The project's goal will be achieved through an online microclimatic tool able to activate two different abatement systems (dry and wet scrubber). More specifically, a prototype of wet scrubber and an already existing dry scrubber will be tested in two pig farms located in Lombardy and two pig farms located in Catalonia, two regions which are characterised by high stocking densities and poor air quality. By demonstrating the application of innovative techniques to monitor and reduce NH3, CH4 and PM emissions in large scale pig farms, the LIFE-MEGA project intends to improve the quality of air that animals and farmers breathe daily, with positive effects on their health and thus on farm performance and profitability.
