Covenant of Mayors Case Study on resilience in Barcelona (Spain) – 한국어 (Korean)

The future of cities has been the centre of debates in the last 3 months all around the world. The reorganization of public space, social and economic activity to new priorities in such a short period of time, has forced local governments to think different. The IUC-LAC Open Dialogues have tried to capitalize the added value of international city to city cooperation & thematic networking of European cities, which have started earlier to suffer the impacts of the pandemia, and LAC ones, to transform these impacts into opportunities. The present report presents the main “takeaways” around each webinar helping us to identify key topics that will be reinforced and accelerated in the “new normal”.

IUC India in collaboration with TERI India delivered in September and October 2020 a capacity building programme on 'Mainstreaming Urban Climate Action'. The programme was based on four short webinar modules focusing on building the capacity and knowledge of practitioners in urban local bodies (ULBs), state representatives, policy experts, researchers, scholars, and university students. The webinar on contract development and management of PPP projects was conceptualised and delivered under the IUC/India program. The main objective of the webinar was to build capacity of urban local bodies towards PPP procurement and management, understand the complexities, improve contract development and management and develop better projects. The webinar covered the benefits of PPP projects, lifecycle, key features, risk management, bidding, case studies, etc.

The baseline study for the solid waste management system project has been commissioned as part of the Kochi-Vilnius strategic collaboration under the European Union International Urban Cooperation (IUC)-India program. The study represents the key deliverable of the Urban Cooperation Local Action Plan for the city of Kochi. The report has been based on secondary research, stakeholder consultations, case studies and review of recommendations.

Aarhus and Udaipur have been working together under the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Strategic Sector Cooperation since 2018 on the broader themes of urban water management. Aarhus and Udaipur entered into a MoU in December 2016. Udaipur and Aarhus joined European Union’s International urban cooperation program on June 4th, 2019 and December 18th, 2019 respectively. Since then, IUC is working with both the cities to further strengthen this already formed partnership and work on sludge to energy technologies.

Seoul (South Korea) engages with and leads networks of international peers committed to climate action. The city uses thorough emissions inventories to ensure its own success, and to inspire action in cities across the world.

This publication looks back on all that has been accomplished during the IUC programme, with a focus on presenting best practices from across IUC regions that showcase how city-to-city and region-to-region cooperation can be used to foster and support sustainable urban development and the localisation of global goals.

Kyoto (Japan) is committed to climate change mitigation and adaptation. The city works with diverse groups within the municipality, region, and as a part of the larger international community – including as a signatory to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) – to meet its climate action targets. Kyoto looks at climate action holistically: it must address a wide variety of sectors, engage diverse local voices, and utilise interventions that are environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.
