This report gives an account of how the IUC programme contributes to the SDGs and the New Urban Agenda. It outlines the challenges facing cities and how their cooperation has contributed to solving them. The report then takes a closer look at how international agendas affect cities and how progress reporting is set out, particularly given the challenge of accurately capturing the local contribution and achieving a sample that represents diverse cities. Next, the IUC programme and its components are briefly presented, followed by an analysis of how cities and regions engaged in the programme have contributed to the Sustainable Development Agenda. The report concludes with lessons learnt and considerations for a future programme of a comparable nature.

The report summarizes the key activities during the five-day visit to Vilnius, Lithuania by a delegation from the Indian city of Kochi. The report provides a useful overview of the processes, best practices, and lessons learned in relation to solid waste management, urban mobility, water supply and wastewater, and urban development. Roles and responsibilities, technologies, partnership options and future plans were also elaborated. The visit provided the opportunity to select the topic of cooperation between the two cities (i.e., solid waste management).

The Paris Agreement and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) mean that for the first time there is one Agenda for a Sustainable Future that brings all nations into a common cause to undertake ambitious global climate efforts. Despite this favourable environment, a serious gap between funds available and funds deployed in local projects still exists.

This second publication of the International Urban Cooperation (IUC) financial series aims to give an overview on financial sources at national level that are available for urban development, helping to understand the range of options accessible on the market, and inspire the exploration of innovative solutions. In addition to presenting traditional approaches and forms of municipal finance, this study also seeks to outline innovative solutions for revenue mobilization for local and subnational governments, using case studies for illustration.

Esta tercera publicación de la serie sobre financiación del Programa Internacional de Cooperación Urbana (IUC) tiene por objeto proporcionar una visión general sobre mecanismos innovadores de financiación. Aunque las formas tradicionales de financiación municipal no dejan de ser importantes, los nuevos instrumentos financieros y la implicación del sector privado se han convertido en elementos esenciales. A pesar de ello, la experiencia demuestra que, incluso no existiendo un problema de solvencia crediticia, la mayoría de los gobiernos locales y regionales desconocen la existencia o bien no se atreven a emplear herramientas de financiación poco convencionales. El propósito de este manual es recopilar los sistemas de financiación innovadora más habituales, aplicados también en economías emergentes e ilustrados con estudios de caso.

This publication is an introduction to the overview on Green Building from European perspective. This study is a result of a research conducted by the International Urban Cooperation - Latin America and the Caribbean (IUC-LAC) . This documentation is inspired by the New Urban Agenda (NUA) and the work that seeks to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the urban level.

El presente documento detalla recomendaciones sobre detalles relativos a la implementación de huertos urbanos, los espacios que se utilizarán; el trabajo requerido para su puesta en marcha, los pasos que se tomaron en las ciudades de referencia para crearlos y mantenerlos. Si bien en la ciudad de Barranquilla ya existe un mecanismo público-privado que podría emplearse para implementar huertos urbanos, los participantes en el diálogo solicitaron la transferencia de unos primeros pasos a modo de recomendaciones para su desarrollo. Estas recomendaciones pueden ser replicadas a otras ciudades.

This case study focuses upon the challenges and opportunities in front of Gwalior with regards to the conservation of privately-owned heritage buildings in the city. There are a number of policies concerning public and government buildings, but privately-owned heritage buildings have been neglected for a considerable time. This case study attempts to address some of the challenges by way of exchange of best practices between Gwalior and the Belgian City of Leuven in the area of heritage conservation.

With an intent to strengthen resilience building in urban India, the National Institute of Urban Affairs in partnership with a number of organizations and projects, such as IUC-India, organized the Urban Thinkers Campus – ‘The Resilient City We Need’ in New Delhi on the 25th and 26th September 2019. The Campus was part of the series of events being organized across the globe as part of the World Urban Campaign by UN Habitat in the run-up to the World Urban Forum in 2020 in Abu Dhabi. This case study summarises the journey of Nagpur and Karlsruhe as part of their participation in the IUC program. The case study examines the baseline scenario with regards to urban mobility in cities as well as Public Bike Sharing (PBS) as a potential solution. The feasibility, implementation and direct/indirect benefits of PBS are being elaborated.
