Through the IUC programme, cities and regions across Europe have entered into partnerships on sustainable development with counterparts from around the globe. For a full list of city pairings so far, see the table below:
The Mexican city of Chihuahua is collaborating with Zaragoza, Spain on a range of issues, from sustainable mobility, waste water treatment and improvement of the quality of the air through to the implementation of the “Ecocity model”.
The main economic activities in both cities are related: Chihuahua is primarily focused on manufacturing activities, while Zaragoza has an extensive expertise in terms of logistics intelligence. This has resulted in an interesting and fruitful exchange of best practices and knowledge.
This city pairing has already carried out visits to each of the cities, using the opportunity to discuss the development of their strategy on developing a “city for citizens” more deeply. The strategy will be based on the model used by Zaragoza.
This strategy includes the exchange of best practices to improve the access of all citizens to services, and the possibility to implement the latest technologies in their collection systems based on the “tarjeta ciudadana” model.
In addition to these actions, Zaragoza is looking forward to organising webinars to exchange knowledge and experiences related to the Bus Rapid Transit with Chihuahua and to contribute to the improvement of non-motorised mobility (public space, walking belts and bike paths).
