During the international conference on “Climate Crisis: Action for Tropical Coastal Cities”, which took place in Mumbai on 27-28 February, the City of Mumbai joined the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM), signally their commitment to taking measured and transparent climate action.
The commitment was signed by Mr. Praveen Pardeshi, Municipal Commissioner of Greater Mumbai in the presence of Mr. Ugo Astuto, Ambassador of the European Union to India. Mumbai became the 16th Indian city to have joined the GCoM, representing over 42 million Indian citizens in total.
These Indian signatories join the over 10,000 global cities who have also committed to the GCoM.
Shortly thereafter, in May 2020, the GCoM India coordination group held their 9th meeting, which included the participation of IUC India, alongside ICLEI South Asia, WRI India, CDP, the National Institute of Urban Affairs, The Climate Group, AIILSG, and TERI. The main objectives of the meeting were to provide updates on each member organisation’s climate change activities, review the status of their joint initiatives with IUC India, assess national/international developments, and create the framework for future collaborations.
