In November 2019, North American and European Cities gathered in Brussels (Belgium) to learn about and share approaches to sustainable urban development.
The IUC programme fosters inter-city cooperation in a number of ways, including city pairings for direct city-to-city cooperation, the Global Covenant of Mayors, global City-to-City events that bring together all IUC city-pairings, and regional events that convene city pairings from one region. This IUC North America (IUC-NA) regional meeting brought together European and North American city pairings for collaboration and knowledge-exchange workshops.
The IUC-NA workshops were attended by 39 out of the 40 North American cities participating in IUC pairings. This exceptional attendance enabled the European and North American participants to share diverse experiences of challenges, results, and lessons learnt through city-to-city cooperation.
Participating cities also broke into smaller working groups to delve more deeply into discussions on core themes of urban mobility, circular economy and urban waste management, and inclusive economic development. These groups resulted in the proposals of new, regional webinar series; exchanging specific technical data and information; proposing further collaboration; and more.
