Within the framework of the European Union, International Urban Cooperation programme, a delegation of five Dubrovnik City representatives led by the honourable president of city council, Mr. Marko Potrebica, has visited the City of Panaji between 13-16th of November 2018. The Croatian delegation was informed about best practices in urban development projects in Panaji, smart city initiatives, solid waste management, sustainable transport and other topics. The four days program was a mix of practical and theoretical exposure to various success stories in urban development. In order to enhance the quality of life in urban areas, the two cities will work together on a specific action plan on urban issues.

Mr. Milind Naik, minister of urban development of the Goa state has said: “We warmly welcome the delegates from Dubrovnik city which it is not only similar to Panaji in terms of urban challenges but shares also historical links. In 1563, a church dedicated to St. Vlaha was built by Dubrovnik in Goa which remains as the epitome of a strong relation between Goa and Dubrovnik. Our city is quite touristic and it has been taking a lot of initiatives to fulfill the touristic demands. With this partnership, we anticipate furthering deep dive into the potential of smart and innovative solutions which could be integrated into city planning.”

Mr. Marko Potrebica, president of the city council of Dubrovnik said: “There are a lot of similarities between Dubrovnik and Panaji in terms of size, economic activities, challenges etc. This visit has given us a chance to explore in great detail the possibilities of working on specific areas of cooperation for sustainable urban development. Like Panaji, Dubrovnik also receives millions of tourists on an annual basis. This is a good opportunity for us to work with Panaji on various areas of cooperation like urban mobility, solid waste management. In addition, we are highly motivated with the positive response that Panaji has asserted towards this partnership. As part of the EU programme, we are looking forward to a productive cooperation and exchange of ideas to the benefit of both cities.”
