IUC event: Local and National Partnerships Driving Sustainable Urban Development

Local and regional governments can act as a key partner to national governments as they implement the Paris Agreement, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction, as well as the New Urban Agenda and other international commitments: thanks to their direct connection with local needs and challenges they can help nations craft policies and implementation strategies that are highly effective on the ground.

Local, regional and national leaders working in partnership have a key role to play to optimise and accelerate action and sustainable development around the globe.  To explore this multi-level cooperation, the IUC programme will hold a session at the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco (USA) on 13 September from 14.00 – 16.30 local time.

The event will bring together city representatives from IUC and Global Covenant of Mayors cities from around the world, regional, and national policymakers, as well as representatives from international institutions to discuss how to shape effective partnerships for the implementation of climate action and for sustainable development. Questions that will be addressed include:

  • How can local governments complement national efforts in the implementation of climate action and sustainable development?
  • How can national frameworks best take into account the roles and mandates of all levels of government to enable action?
  • How can cooperation be optimised between levels?
  • What are some of the innovative and inspiring examples of how multi-level governance can support local sustainable development and climate action, while contributing to achieving global goals?
