Cities will convene for their first meeting in Japan | April 23rd 2018

The first official gathering in Japan for the participating cities will be held on April 23rd 2018.  During this week, there will be a series of information exchange between the urban experts, as well as a number of site visits to facilities and communities using innovative technology and practices. More updates will follow on this event.


Second round of call for applications starts | January 18th 2018 / Japan and EU

The call for applications for the second round of the International Urban Cooperation (IUC) programme’s city-to-city pairing initiative was officially launched. The initiative will see European local governments matched with counterparts from Japan as well as those from China, Chile, India, Peru and the United States of America.

Official launch of the IUC- City to City programme | November 10th 2017 / Brussels

Over 120 cities from Europe, China, Asia, India, Japan, North America and South America gathered in Brussels.  Participants to the IUC-Japan programme were, of course, members to this memorable event held at the Charlemagne. The cities of Yokohama and Frankfurt were each invited to present their practices and visions for cooperation.

Official launch of IUC-Japan | November 9th & 11th 2017 / Brussels

Five cities selected for the IUC-Japan programme gathered in Brussels for their first joint event.

Five city pairs are officially selected for the programme | Early November 2017 / EU and Japan

In order of geographical location in Japan (N->S) the pairings are

  • Hirosaki / Donostia=San Sebastian (Spain)
  • Koriyama / Essen (Germany)
  • Yokohama / Frankfurt am Main (Germany)
  • Ichinomiya / Ioannina (Greece)
  • Ikoma / Ancona (Italy)

First round of call for applications for the EU and Japan takes place and successfully concludes | July - August 2017 / EU and Japan


The concept of the IUC programme is introduced to Japan | March 17th, 2017 / Japan

Over 100 participants including representatives of Japanese cities, the business sector, and the media gathered at the EU House, office to the European Delegation to Japan, and listened to Dr Ronald HALL, Chief Advisor Directorate General for Regional and Urban Policy European Commission, talk of the programme’s ambitions, objectives, and structure. IUC-Japan’s presentation material can be found below.
